In my Doctrine and Covenants class we have been looking for the one line that stands out to us as the one thing we are to take away from each section of reading. This has become very powerful for me. It isn't enough to quote one line of the scriptures, we have to then defend why it stood out and how we can apply it to our lives to become better followers of Christ.
One that stood out to me is found in Doctrine and Covenants 34:4. “And blessed are you because you have believed.” Belief is a huge part of the gospel, but belief cannot stand alone. We must act upon that belief. There are two very different ways to know the gospel. One is in your head, where you know the concepts and ideas, the other is knowing in your heart. You cannot know in your heart and not follow through on that belief. This is the belief that Nephi had, but not Laman and Lemuel who only knew in their minds. It is because Laman and Lemuel only knew in their minds that we have 1 Nephi 4:3. Nephi asks his brothers how they can doubt when they have had great things shown unto them and have had an angel speak to them. His brothers knew that these things had happened, but they hadn't been internalized. Laman and Lemuel weren't ready to accept the things that their father and brother told them and so they didn't.
When we believe in our hearts and act upon this knowledge we will be blessed by the Lord.
